Breast Surgery Q &A
Breast augmentation and breast lifts are two of the most popular cosmetic procedures, but they’re not the only types of breast surgery. Women and men can also undergo breast reduction. The plastic surgeons at HB Surgical Arts possess the surgical skill and artistic eye needed to produce breast surgery results that meet your expectations. If you’re considering breast surgery, call the office in Huntington Beach, California, or book an appointment online.
What is a breast lift?
When you get a breast lift, also called mastopexy, your breast are reshaped and lifted by removing excess skin, then tightening the remaining tissue. The areola can also be reduced in size, and then re-positioned so that it’s appropriately sized and placed after your breasts are lifted.
A breasts lift may be the best choice if you have sagging breasts, your breasts have lost their shape or volume, or the nipples are stretched. However, a breasts lift will not change the size of your breasts; for that, you need augmentation or reduction surgery.
What should I know about breast augmentation?
A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to enlarge the size of your breasts. It is also used to change the shape of your breasts and correct asymmetry. Breast augmentation and breast lift are two of the most popular cosmetic procedures, but they’re not the only types of breast surgery. Women and men can also undergo breast reduction. The plastic surgeons at HB Surgical Arts possess the surgical skills and artistic eye needed to produce breast surgery results that meet your expectations. Before undergoing breast augmentation, you’ll choose the type of implant used to enlarge your breasts. Both types come in different sizes and shapes:
Saline implants
These implants have a silicone outer shell that’s put in place while it’s deflated, and then your surgeon fills it with saline water (salt water). Another type of saline implant, a structured saline implant, has an inner structure designed to make the implant feel more natural.
Silicone implants
These implants have a silicone outer shell that’s prefilled with a silicone gel. The gel’s thick texture gives your implant a natural look. Silicone implants also feel more like your natural breasts.
What should I know about breast reduction?
Women with large breasts develop back and shoulder pain and find that they often need to modify their activities or wear a bra that’s restrictive and uncomfortable.
During breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, your surgeon removes fat, glandular breast tissue and skin. After reshaping your breast, your nipple is repositioned to fit your new breast.
What is male breast reduction?
Gynecomastia refers to the abnormal growth of breast tissue in men. This condition, usually caused by a hormone imbalance, leads to enlarged breast glands that often cause pain and tenderness as they begin to grow. You may also have excess fat, but fat alone isn’t considered gynecomastia.
The primary treatment is gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction. Your surgeon at HB Surgical Arts removes glandular tissue and excess skin and repositions the nipple if needed.
